Abstract

This thesis explores how to design buildings for the Arctic climate of West Greenland. It develops a design for a family counseling centre in Uummannaq that responds to local culture, the landscape and terrain (topography), and the climate. The work combines a careful study of the site and Greenlandic building traditions with a review of Arctic construction technologies. Calculations of energy use are integrated throughout, from early design sketches to final detailing, to inform design decisions.
