Abstract

This project develops an external Wavefield Synthesis object for the Max/MSP visual programming environment. Wavefield Synthesis (WFS) is an audio technique that uses arrays of loudspeakers to recreate a sound’s wave field and produce convincing virtual sound sources in space. The object, named [wfs~], is written in C using the Max SDK and built with the Xcode IDE. The thesis reviews background in psychoacoustics (how people perceive sound), C programming, and wave field synthesis methods. [wfs~] was evaluated on how accurately it reproduces virtual, static (non-moving) sound sources and was compared with the WFSColider software. Results show no statistically significant difference between the two programs for this task.

Dette projekt udvikler et eksternt Wavefield Synthesis-objekt til den visuelle programmeringsplatform Max/MSP. Wavefield Synthesis (WFS) er en lydteknik, der bruger rækker af højttalere til at genskabe en lyds bølgefelt og skabe overbevisende indtryk af virtuelle lydkilder i rummet. Objektet, kaldet [wfs~], er skrevet i C med Max SDK og udviklet i Xcode IDE. Afhandlingen gennemgår baggrundsviden i psykoakustik (hvordan mennesker opfatter lyd), C-programmering og metoder til bølgefeltsyntese. [wfs~] blev vurderet på, hvor præcist det kan genskabe virtuelle, statiske (ikke-bevægende) lydkilder, og blev sammenlignet med softwaren WFSColider.
