Abstract

This master's thesis was initiated by a project proposal from Vestas Wind Systems A/S, a leading wind turbine manufacturer. It explores offshore wind farms in which turbines are interconnected using direct current (DC) and power is transmitted to shore via a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link. This approach is promising given rising electricity demand and the long distances between offshore sites and the mainland. The main objective is to develop steady-state models (models of operation under normal, stable conditions) of a complete wind turbine system. The work focuses on selected AC-DC converters between the generator output and the turbines' DC connection, that is, devices that convert the generator's alternating current into direct current for the DC network.
