Abstract

Following the 2016 earthquakes in central Italy, this thesis examines how stakeholders in the Monti Sibillini National Park have approached tourism development as part of recovery, focusing on slow tourism as a pathway to sustainable development in a fragile protected area. It explores the territorial conditions that enable and challenge slow tourism, the activities currently undertaken, and the key role of collaboration among the park authority, municipalities, and local operators. A qualitative case study design is used, drawing on structured and semi-structured interviews and analysis of official documents. Within this frame, the analysis addresses priorities such as hiking and cycling trail networks, improved management of visitor flows, alternative forms of hospitality, cultural heritage, local gastronomy, and events, all aimed at encouraging longer stays and meaningful local encounters. Detailed findings are not included in this excerpt, but the thesis contributes to supply-side understandings of slow tourism and offers practical insights for rural destinations seeking to use tourism for post-disaster recovery.
