Abstract
This thesis examines how the principles often associated with Nordic exceptionalism—normalization, openness, education, responsibility, and security—are put into practice in the Danish prison system. The study is based on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with inmates, teachers, and guards at the closed Storstrøm Prison on Falster. We focus on how information and communication technologies (ICT), especially a prison education intranet called SKnet, influence inmates’ preparation for life after release and their reintegration into society. Using an Actor-Network approach—a method that traces relationships among people, technologies, rules, and routines—we follow both human and non-human actors involved in rehabilitation. The thesis also considers how rehabilitation goals intersect with political decisions, public opinion, and technological innovation in prisons. We describe where the five principles are applied or overlooked at Storstrøm and discuss the ways ICT can support or constrain rehabilitation and reintegration.
Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan principperne bag nordisk exceptionalisme—normalisering, åbenhed, uddannelse, ansvar og sikkerhed—kommer til udtryk i det danske fængselsvæsen. Undersøgelsen bygger på etnografisk feltarbejde og interviews med indsatte, undervisere og fængselsbetjente i det lukkede Storstrøm Fængsel på Falster. Vi fokuserer på, hvordan informations- og kommunikationsteknologi (IKT), især et uddannelsesintranet for indsatte kaldet SKnet, påvirker de indsattes forberedelse til livet efter løsladelse og deres reintegration i samfundet. Med en aktør-netværk-tilgang, en metode der følger relationer mellem mennesker, teknologier, regler og rutiner, følger vi både menneskelige og ikke-menneskelige aktører i rehabiliteringsprocessen. Specialet forholder sig også til, hvordan mål om rehabilitering spiller sammen med politiske beslutninger, den offentlige opinion og teknologisk innovation i fængselssystemet. Vi beskriver, hvor de fem principper anvendes eller overses i Storstrøm Fængsel, og drøfter, hvordan IKT kan understøtte eller begrænse rehabilitering og reintegration.
