Abstract
This MSc thesis examines how the ideas often called Nordic Exceptionalism—normalization, openness, education, responsibility, and security—are put into practice in the Danish prison system. We conducted ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with inmates, teachers, and guards at the closed Storstrøm Prison on Falster. Our main focus is how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) influence inmates’ rehabilitation and reintegration into society. We use an Actor-Network approach, a method that traces connections between people, technologies, and institutions, to follow the roles of both human and non-human actors in this process. We begin with SKnet, an internal intranet designed to support inmates’ education, and examine how it is used. Along the way, we consider how rehabilitation goals interact with political decisions, public opinion, and technological innovation in the prison context. The thesis reports where the principles of Nordic Exceptionalism are applied or overlooked at Storstrøm Prison and discusses the effects of ICT on inmates’ opportunities to prepare for life after release.
