Abstract

This thesis explores how to embed sustainability in the early design phase (preliminary design). It focuses on how the interests of external stakeholders and feedback from client surveys are reflected in the design process for a residence for socially disadvantaged young people. The study draws on local and national context descriptions and insights from social psychology to better understand users’ needs and behavior. The resulting design adopts an educational and empathetic approach that stays closely connected to the changing sensory stimuli of the surrounding countryside.
