Abstract

This thesis examines tourism in Ørestad, Copenhagen, where everyday settings such as the residential building 8Tallet and the public high school Ørestad Gymnasium intersect with architecture tourism. Against a backdrop of growing visitor numbers, a strategic push to disperse tourism into city districts, and demand for authentic local experiences, the study asks how tourism reshapes everyday life and affects the social conditions for long-term sustainability. Centering the lived experiences of residents, students and staff, and the power and responsibility structures around tourism management, the research adopts a phronetic, social-constructivist approach and qualitative methods: in-depth interviews, observation and netnography. The framework links place making with social sustainability to address how physical (e.g., architecture) and non-physical factors (e.g., ethics, sense of belonging, host–guest relations) shape places when the ordinary becomes a tourist experience. The analysis shows blurred lines between public and private, both opportunities and challenges for locals, and fragmented governance. In response, the thesis introduces Socially Sustainable Place Making—integrating tourism, social sustainability and often overlooked private spheres into the planning and design of urban places—proposed as an add-on to traditional place making and a key element in future strategic urban development.
