Abstract
This thesis examines how architecture-driven tourism shapes everyday life in Ørestad, Copenhagen, focusing on the residential building 8Tallet and the high school Ørestad Gymnasium. Against a backdrop of rising visitor numbers and a strategy to disperse tourism beyond the city center, the study explores how visitors seeking authentic experiences engage with places not planned for tourism and how this affects local quality of life and the social sustainability of these places. It asks how everyday life is being reshaped, how residents and users experience belonging, how host–guest relations and material design influence encounters, and who holds power and responsibility for managing tourism. Adopting a phronetic social science and social constructivist approach, the research uses qualitative primary data from in-depth interviews, observations, and netnography within a case study design. The theoretical framework brings place making into a tourism context and integrates social sustainability by considering physical and non-physical factors and ethical concerns. The analysis indicates a need for Socially Sustainable Place Making, a concept that recognizes blurred boundaries between public and private, centers social life alongside economic considerations, and is proposed as a supplement to traditional place making and as input to future strategic urban development.
