Abstract
This thesis investigates Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) in ad hoc wireless mesh networks, focusing on how cooperative relaying and recoding at the relay may influence performance in a classic Alice Bob topology. Methodologically, a program was developed using NS-3 as a library so that RLNC experiments can be run without modifying the simulator. The implementation covers source, relay, and sink over NS-3’s 802.11 and propagation models. Three protocols are defined and studied: direct transmission, cooperative relaying, and cooperative relaying with recoding. For each, analytical expressions are derived (e.g., for the number of required transmissions and innovative packets) and compared against NS-3 simulations. The thesis states assumptions, discusses results, and outlines protocol improvements. While the excerpt does not provide numerical findings, the contributions include a reusable simulation tool, protocol specifications, and an analytical framework to assess the potential benefits of cooperative relaying and recoding.
