Abstract
This thesis explores how architecture can enhance quality of life, autonomy, and social inclusion for people living with dementia by rethinking care homes beyond traditional institutional frames. Grounded in a user-centred and socially sustainable approach, it adopts the state-of-the-art “dementia village” concept to create homelike and safe environments. The project reinterprets town principles—landmarks, visual connections, and legible architecture—to ease wayfinding and create gradations of community and privacy. Methodologically, it employs an Integrated Design Process informed by interdisciplinary insights from psychology, sociology, and neurology and a phenomenological understanding of home. Key design priorities include light, materiality, detailing, and indoor climate, drawing on Nordic building traditions to reconcile function, aesthetics, and connection to nature. A demographic and capacity analysis identified Aabenraa Municipality as a high-need area; a central, accessible site is chosen to strengthen users’ ties to the local community. Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan arkitektur kan fremme livskvalitet, autonomi og social inklusion for mennesker med demens ved at gentænke plejeboliger ud over traditionelle institutionsrammer. Med udgangspunkt i en brugerdrevet og socialt bæredygtig tilgang anvendes den såkaldte demenslandsby som state-of-the-art-koncept for at skabe et hjemligt og trygt miljø. Projektet fortolker byens principper gennem vartegn, visuelle forbindelser og læsbar arkitektur, så wayfinding lettes, og der opstår grader af fællesskab og privatliv. Metodisk bygger arbejdet på en integreret designproces med tværfaglige indsigter fra psykologi, sociologi og neurologi samt en fænomenologisk forståelse af hjemmet. Væsentlige designgreb omfatter lys, materialitet, detaljering og indeklima, og der trækkes på nordiske byggetraditioner for at forene funktion, æstetik og naturtilknytning.
