Abstract
This master's thesis in urban architecture presents a design proposal and masterplan for the post-industrial redevelopment of Struer Harbour, Denmark. It addresses challenges common to many deindustrialized ports—loss of primary activities, disconnection from the urban fabric, and pressures from rising water levels—and asks how the harbour can be reactivated and reconnected to city and nature by shifting from an industrial to a human scale while foregrounding biological, cultural, and social values in alignment with ongoing municipal plans. The project applies an Integrated Design Process (Knudstrup, 2004) with iterative stages of problem formulation, multi-scalar analysis, sketching (hand drawing, collages, digital drawings, and physical models), synthesis, and presentation. The methodology includes a site visit and meetings with Struer Municipality, context and theoretical studies, and precedent visits to other harbours (Odense, Copenhagen, Antwerp, Klaipėda) to inform spatial possibilities and strategies, including plan work combined with 3D modelling to refine terrain and spatial composition. The work culminates in a final design comprising a masterplan, sections, detailed zoning plans, and visualizations. Specific design outcomes and evaluations are presented in later chapters and are not included in this excerpt.
