Abstract

This master’s project in Urban Architecture develops a design proposal and masterplan for the transformation of Struer Harbour as a case of post-industrial port redevelopment. It starts from challenges common to many ports after industrial decline, including inactive facilities, the harbour’s disconnection from the city, and pressures from rising water. The central question is how the harbour can be reactivated and re-linked to city and nature by strengthening biological, cultural and social values and shifting from an industrial scale to a human-scaled environment. The methodology is an Integrated Design Process (IDP) with iterative stages of problem formulation, analysis, sketching, synthesis and presentation. The work is informed by a site visit and dialogue with Struer Municipality, references from visits to other harbours (Odense, Copenhagen, Antwerpen and Klaipeda), literature, and a mix of hand sketches, models and digital drawings. The report presents contextual and theoretical analyses, design objectives and strategies, and a comprehensive proposal including a masterplan, sections, detailed zoning and visualisations. As a design-led study, it does not report measured outcomes; instead, it demonstrates possible approaches to reconnect harbour, city and nature and to create conditions for future activity.
