Abstract
This master’s thesis examines how Service Design and Foresight can be combined to make urban renewal in Copenhagen more participatory and future-ready, focusing on translating citizen visions into actionable strategies. Using a research-through-design approach, the project combined desk research, a questionnaire, expert and process-mapping interviews, workshops, co-creation sessions, benchmarking and ideation to understand current practices and design an intervention. The outcome is PlaceToBe, a service concept for Copenhagen Municipality’s urban renewal department that embeds a participatory process and a digital platform to strengthen citizen engagement across the renewal timeline. The thesis also introduces the Lenses Framework, a tool to analyze and organize stakeholder input and future visions across thematic layers (local context, social, political, environmental, economic, technological and legal) to support decision-making and implementation. The work highlights the value of applying systemic and participatory perspectives from Service Design together with Foresight methodologies to navigate urban complexity and support resilient, long-term planning.
