Abstract

Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan spamfiltrering kan udliciteres til andre maskiner for at spare ressourcer. Tilgangen kombinerer trust management (metoder til at vurdere, hvilke maskiner der er pålidelige) og Bayesianske netværk (sandsynlighedsmodeller til beslutningstagning). Vi designer systemet TrustOne, der bruger disse værktøjer til at beslutte, hvornår og til hvilke maskiner filtreringen skal delegeres, til at håndtere risici og til at fastsætte, hvor høj sikkerhed der kræves for at lade en anden maskine filtrere på ens vegne. Ved at placere spamfiltre på flere samarbejdende maskiner tættere på, hvor spammet opstår—så kilden i praksis "omringes"—reducerer tilgangen både netværksbåndbreddeforbrug og de beregningsressourcer, som ellers skulle bruges på den enkelte maskine.

This thesis explores how to outsource spam filtering to other machines to save resources. The approach combines trust management (methods for assessing which machines are reliable) and Bayesian networks (probabilistic models for decision-making). We design a system, TrustOne, that uses these tools to decide when and to whom filtering should be delegated, to handle risk, and to set the required confidence to trust another machine to filter on one’s behalf. By placing spam filters on multiple cooperating machines closer to where spam originates—effectively "surrounding" the source—the approach reduces network bandwidth usage and the computing resources otherwise needed on individual machines.
