Abstract

Music and technology have always shaped each other, and this link is tightening as digital tools enter the composing process. Artificial intelligence (AI) is both promising and problematic, especially for musical storytelling, meaning, and emotion. This thesis uses a post-phenomenological approach (which examines how technologies mediate or shape human experience) to study two AI-assisted composition tools: Orb Composer and Orb Producer Suite. Through ethnographic studies with users and listeners, it examines how these tools work, what they enable and constrain, and how they can be integrated in ways that support the experiences of both music makers and audiences. The analysis identifies eight recurring forms of technological mediation: (1) how sound and the communication of story, meaning, and emotion are shaped; (2) how the listener’s experience is shaped; (3) how AI proposes or develops musical ideas; (4) the balance between intuitive and rule-based creativity; (5) the machine as a creative partner; (6) shared creative decision-making; (7) how inspiration is sparked or filtered; and (8) how people interpret and use AI music software (the hermeneutics of use). These insights inform techno-anthropological recommendations (focused on human–technology relations) for integrating AI tools into musical practice.
