Abstract
This thesis explores how mobile technology can make invisible information visible in our surroundings. Information can relate to different points in time—the past, present, and future. To test this idea, we built two prototypes. PhotoWorld brings the past to life by placing photographs in the urban locations where they were taken. HouseView makes possible futures visible by showing planned architecture on site (in situ). From evaluating both systems, we learned: - Augmented Reality (AR)—overlaying digital content on the real world—requires careful 3D registration, meaning precise alignment of virtual objects with physical places. - Temporal diversity—combining past, present, and future information—is essential when presenting information. - Digital visualization is well suited to communicate the time-related aspects of a context.
