Abstract
Online streaming has made it possible to listen to vast amounts of music anywhere on phones, computers, and other devices. Yet we know little about how young people actually use these services. This study examines how teenagers use YouTube for music in their everyday lives. We focus on their listening habits and on both instrumental (practical) needs—such as easily finding and playing songs—and non-instrumental (social and emotional) needs—such as sharing and mood. We identify four key patterns in how teens use YouTube for music: (1) they repurpose a video platform as a music service; (2) free access supports socializing and shared listening; (3) a continuous stream of music makes listening convenient; and (4) always having access to music is essential. By documenting these needs and experiences, the study improves understanding of cloud music services (online streaming) and points to design implications for future music services.
