Abstract
This study tests crude oils from the Danish North Sea (Halfdan field) that differ in acid number (a measure of acidic compounds in the oil) together with Valhal formation water used as an ageing fluid at 115°C. We apply the Modified Flotation Test (MFT), a laboratory method to probe oil–brine–rock interactions and wettability (whether the rock surface prefers water or oil). We prepared different dilutions of produced water (saline reservoir water) to adjust the wettability of Dan chalk by lowering salinity and ionic strength. This enabled us to test multiple combinations of crude oils and brines with distinct properties and, consequently, different reactivity toward the chalk surface. By analyzing both oil and brine properties, we aimed to clarify the mechanisms that drive wettability alteration.
