Abstract

This thesis examines how to design the information architecture of e-sports tournament websites so people can easily navigate, understand, and interact with content. It focuses on navigation, organization, and labeling (the names used in menus and on pages) and on involving users directly in the design process. The case study is HenTour.com, a website for tournaments in the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game Heroes of Newerth. The study looks at the site's information ecology, that is, the interplay of context, content, and users, to understand what the site needs to support. Methods include heuristic evaluation (an expert usability review), card sorting (asking people to group and name content), and an online survey. The work produces concrete recommendations for improving HenTour.com and, more broadly, a straightforward approach that others can use to evaluate and redesign similar websites with a strong user focus.
