Abstract
This thesis examines how social entrepreneurship in tourism affects local host communities, focusing on volunteer tourism in Ubud, Bali. Guided by the research question on the impacts of social entrepreneurship on communities, it adopts a qualitative, exploratory, constructivist case study design. Data were gathered through ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation, unstructured and semi-structured interviews, and field notes, complemented by secondary sources. VP Bali, a nonprofit that places volunteer English teachers, serves as the case to explore the role of the social entrepreneur, how the organization mediates relationships between volunteers and communities, and potential economic, psychological (including women’s), and social empowerment outcomes alongside cross-cultural exchange. The thesis critically assesses the outcomes of volunteer work and the personal changes volunteers experience. VP Bali is presented as an example of how social entrepreneurship may foster positive social change, while the study primarily maps possible impacts rather than offering definitive conclusions.
