Abstract
This thesis examines how social media platforms contribute to the promotion and implementation of human rights and activism for social change, focusing on their possibilities and limitations. Through a case study of the training hub Plataforma Global, administered by MS ActionAid in El Salvador, it analyzes the use of social media in human rights education and capacity building. The study reviews teaching methods and learning processes, situates practices in local and global contexts, and discusses power relations among states, advocates, social actors, and global civil society, drawing on theories of the network society and human rights education. Findings indicate that social media can strengthen organization and advocacy by enabling coordination and providing alternative communication channels, but its ability to spread democratic values, implement human rights, and achieve lasting social change is limited without sustained capacity building, empowerment-oriented education, knowledge sharing, and face-to-face, non-virtual networks. The project is grounded in a constructivist approach and highlights practical and contextual constraints on digital tools in rights work.
