Abstract
This thesis examines how Nefab, a Swedish industrial packaging multinational, internationalized its operations in Slovakia. It aims to explain the motives, timing, and entry mode, and to link firm-specific and country-specific advantages. The case centers on the establishment of a greenfield manufacturing and sales unit in Levice in 2005. Using an exploratory single-case design grounded in internationalization theory, the study draws on Dunning’s OLI paradigm, FDI motives (resource-, market-, efficiency-, and strategic asset-seeking), the liability of foreignness, four perspectives (institutional-economic, learning, strategic competition, and inter-organizational), and rational action modeling to structure the analysis of drivers, decision nature, and mode of entry. It explores how Nefab identified, evaluated, and implemented relevant factors, and how area-specific research shaped the choice of Slovakia relative to alternative Central European locations such as Hungary and the Czech Republic. The contribution is a clearer view of the company’s internationalization strategy and the interplay of internal and external drivers in a transition-economy context, with implications for practice and future research. The excerpt provided outlines the research questions, context, and theory; specific methods and empirical findings are not presented.
