Abstract

This thesis examines how to develop a modern visitor centre for the Hammershus castle ruin that meets today's needs. The core focus is how the site's history is communicated to visitors: the history of the place, the castle's original purpose, and the story of the new building. The project aims to shift the experience from a busy tourist attraction to spaces where concentration and contemplation are possible. In addition to architectural principles, a sustainable approach is given high priority. The work is based on the program of Naturstyrelsen (the Danish Nature Agency) for a new visitor centre at Hammershus and uses its requirements as the starting point.
