Abstract

This thesis examines the transformation of the Hammershus castle ruin into a modern visitor centre that meets today’s needs. Throughout the project, the main focus is on communicating the history of Hammershus—including the history of the site, the castle’s original purpose, and the story of the new building. The design aims to shift the experience from a crowded tourist attraction to spaces that allow concentration and contemplation. In addition to architectural principles, the project adopts a sustainable approach. The visitor centre is developed based on Naturstyrelsen’s programme for a new centre at Hammershus, using their requirements and requests as the starting point.
