Abstract
This master’s thesis by two industrial design students at Aalborg University describes the design of a product that gives mothers better physical support during breastfeeding. A comfortable position and sufficient support help the mother relax, which is important for milk flow. The market for such products is small, perhaps because they are typically needed only in the first six months, giving them a short useful life. The project presents Groa, a simple piece of furniture made of two parts: a nursing chair and a bedside crib (a small crib that stands next to the parents' bed). Together they can be converted into a cot. With an add-on extension, the cot can be used until the child is seven. The nursing chair is designed to adjust to the individual mother and includes a nursing pillow that fastens around the body to support the arms and lower back.
