Abstract

The project explores the urban renewal of Aalborg’s former freight rail yard. The municipality plans to reopen Østerå, a local stream, across the site and to create a knowledge environment (a campus that brings different educational activities together). The design highlights the area’s industrial heritage by building around preserved elements and making history visible in new public spaces. The proposed campus features open, shared facilities used by multiple educational institutions to encourage collaboration. Similar high school layouts have required an adjustment period elsewhere but are now appreciated. Reopening the stream is paired with inviting play and recreation areas along the water.
