Abstract

Developing countries like India have strong technical capacity and the potential to create new technologies for sustainable development, but infrastructure barriers often hinder their wide deployment. International support mechanisms such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) can help by providing economic support. This thesis examines the factors that influence the development and adoption of sustainable technologies in India through a case study of Fal-G bricks and blocks, a locally developed technology. The study identifies the key actors involved and the conditions that enable or impede the project. Data were collected from multiple sources, including interviews with major contributors. Using established theories, the analysis maps the actors and their roles and pinpoints the factors shaping the project. The results show that some actors have a positive influence, others a negative one, and several roles remain ambiguous and require further analysis. These ambiguous actors appear to have a major impact, for better or worse. CDM contributed to promoting the technology by providing economic support.
