Abstract

This thesis presents the development of TheStringPhone, a polyphonic, physical-modeling digital musical instrument that uses the human voice as excitation. The aim is to explore how to design and implement a sound engine for a voice-driven DMI from the acoustics and synthesis perspective. The work includes a review of DMIs and voice-based systems, design decisions for the sound engine and input, and a from-scratch C++ implementation of core DSP components: a biquad filter, FIFO and circular-buffer delays, a Karplus-Strong/digital waveguide string model, linear predictive coding for a formant filter, an ADSR envelope, peak and RMS compression, and an FDN reverb. The system is integrated with audio examples, and the instrument is evaluated mainly from an engineering standpoint; no user studies are reported in the excerpt. The contribution is a documented working prototype that demonstrates polyphonic voice-excited string synthesis and provides a foundation for more holistic instrument design.
