Abstract

This thesis examines crowdsourced software development as part of the shift from closed to open innovation, focusing on developers’ perspectives within Topcoder’s global community. Building on a prior literature synthesis of benefits and challenges, the study aims to identify the most pervasive problems developers encounter when participating in contests and tasks on the platform, and to understand how Topcoder’s community management addresses these issues. A qualitative netnographic approach is used to analyze community culture and practices, grounded in concepts from open innovation, communities of practice, and a pragmatic view of what constitutes a problem. The contribution is primarily practical: informing platform owners and clients about areas for improvement to retain talent and enhance service quality, with situational generalizability to similar platforms. Denne afhandling undersøger crowdsourcing af softwareudvikling som en del af skiftet fra lukket til åben innovation, med fokus på udviklernes perspektiv i Topcoders globale fællesskab.
