Abstract
This project explores how to create facial motion capture (recording facial movements for a digital character) using inexpensive equipment, so that emotions can be read from the character’s facial expressions. Using a standard webcam, I recorded an actor while he talked about his beloved cat to elicit natural expressions. I evaluated the results through an expert review, a quantitative test, and qualitative tests; one test was discarded because it was executed improperly. The findings show that the character’s facial expressions communicated the same emotions as in the original video. With further development, this low-cost approach could be useful for animation companies.
