Abstract
This thesis examines the role of back-translation in intercultural communication by asking what happens to a text when it is translated forward and back across cultural borders. Drawing on discourse analysis and Juliane House’s Functional-Pragmatic Model, and informed by cultural translation theory (including Third Space, cultural hybridity, and (un)translatability), the study analyzes a real back-translation process performed by professional translators using a Danish newspaper article as the source text. The analysis is organized around functional equivalence, field–tenor–mode, and genre. Findings highlight the particular difficulty of conveying expressive text functions after two cultural crossings; they also show that translators act as intuitive social actors, which can affect consistency and thus challenge the validity of back-translation as a general quality assessment method. At the same time, untranslatability can both cause inaccuracies that undermine communicative purpose and create transparency by revealing issues that can be addressed—an advantage of the method. Taken together, the study presents a nuanced view of back-translation as a tool whose limits and benefits are shaped by intercultural context and by globalization’s trend toward increased translatability.
