Abstract
This thesis explores the role of back-translation in intercultural communication. Drawing on discourse analysis and Juliane House’s Functional-Pragmatic Model, and informed by Cultural Translation concepts such as Third Space, cultural hybridity and untranslatability, it examines what happens when a text crosses cultural borders twice, how intercultural context shapes the method, and the strengths and weaknesses of back-translation as a quality assessment tool. A practical back-translation of a Danish newspaper article from Ekstra Bladet, carried out by professional translators, provides the empirical basis. The analysis is organized around function equivalence, field-tenor-mode, and genre. It highlights difficulties in conveying expressive text function across languages, shows translators as intuitive social actors whose decisions are shaped by context, and discusses how untranslatability can both risk distorting communicative purpose and create transparency that supports revision. The discussion also notes increasing translatability in a globalized world. Together, these insights nuance the validity and utility of back-translation within intercultural communication.
