Abstract

This thesis explores how the principles of the 15-minute city can inspire the development of the rural village of Asaa in Brønderslev Municipality to attract new residents and support sustainability. The study is motivated by heightened attention to proximity to everyday services during COVID-19 and alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11. Asaa, under development since 2021 with strong local engagement and a harbor as a key asset, is examined using interviews, observations, GIS-based network and isochrone analysis, a literature review, and document analysis. Findings indicate that Asaa partially aligns with 15-minute city principles, as most of the village falls within service areas for existing essential functions. The development process has also been citizen-led, with local involvement in steering efforts. The thesis concludes that the 15-minute city framework can inspire Asaa and similar villages to embed sustainability and structured citizen participation in planning while enhancing access to everyday services. Although originally designed for urban settings, the concept shows promise when adapted to rural contexts, with potential to improve quality of life and attract newcomers through accessible services and community-driven development.
