Abstract
This thesis explores how the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has envisioned and organized the fight against hunger over time, and how such sociotechnical imaginaries take shape and travel in an Anthropocene context. Drawing on 71 annual State of Food and Agriculture reports, we trace temporal developments in FAO’s overarching imaginary of eradicating hunger from 1947 to 2021. The study combines close and distant reading with DistilBERT-based natural language processing within a slalom, quali-quantitative approach. We interpret findings through feminist STS concepts, including sociotechnical imaginaries, civic epistemologies, the (patchy) Anthropocene, and situated knowledges. The analysis indicates that FAO’s core imaginary—ending world hunger—has remained stable since 1947, while the strategies to achieve it have changed over time. The thesis also considers how these imaginaries relate to institutional ways of knowing and decision-making, and to the uneven, place-based nature of food (in)security.
