This master’s thesis examines how the Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde in Berlin is understood and labeled—whether as the Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten, the Sozialistenfriedhof, or a broader site of remembrance for the German labor movement—and how this identity is communicated today. Drawing on German studies and incorporating communication studies, the work connects the cultural and social history of cemeteries with theories of memory culture, sites of memory, and public monuments. To contextualize the case, it considers Berlin examples such as the Neue Wache and the Ernst Thälmann monument.
