Abstract
This thesis examines E.T.A. Hoffmann’s literary fairy tales Der goldene Topf and Nussknacker und Mausekönig, focusing on the tension between everyday reality and the realm of wonders. Drawing on scholarly literature, it employs a primarily hermeneutic, comparative approach, framed by an introduction to German Romanticism, a clarification of the fairy-tale genre (folk tale versus literary fairy tale), and a contextualization of Hoffmann’s authorship, including Romantic irony and genre blending. The analysis highlights how the protagonists Anselmus and Marie are both torn between skepticism and attraction to the fantastic, and how their experiences cause the two worlds to interpenetrate. The study poses questions about ontological status and perception: Is the wondrous world real, dreamed, or construed as madness? How should readers position themselves within this dualism?
