Abstract
Background: Many adolescents experience non‑traumatic musculoskeletal knee pain, and although exercise is recommended, adherence to rehabilitation is often low. Actively involving young people in shaping their care may improve motivation and adherence. Aim: To develop and test whether a design‑thinking approach can facilitate inclusion of adolescents alongside physiotherapists in co‑creating new rehabilitation models. Method: We designed a Future Workshop with three adolescents (14–19 years) who had at least six months of rehabilitation experience for knee pain and three physiotherapists with at least two years’ experience treating adolescents. Group interactions were observed and audio‑recorded, followed by semi‑structured interviews with all participants; data were thematically analyzed. To limit exclusion, we addressed setting, behaviors, and language. Ideas generated were consolidated into an initial tool, A helping hand to rehabilitation, centered on adolescents’ perspectives and building capacity to manage pain in daily life. Results: Analysis revealed challenges in collaborating across age and experience, with authority differences sometimes limiting adolescents’ participation. At the same time, the Future Workshop’s creative and structured elements appeared to support adolescents’ active involvement as decision‑makers. Conclusion: Including adolescents in co‑design with physiotherapists is feasible but requires careful facilitation to reduce authority imbalances. The Future Workshop shows promise for fostering inclusion, though certain design elements warrant further refinement.
