Abstract
This thesis explores the transformation from printed books to audiobooks and their impact on the Danish usage and perception of literature. By analyzing two contrasting works, "Black Dolphin" and "Har døden taget noget fra dig, så giv det tilbage," it is evident that the audio- book format is not just a simple transference of text from paper to audio, but a transformative medium challenging traditional literary practices and enriching literary experience. The audiobook has emerged as an independent and dynamic medium, introducing voice and sound to literature, enhancing the narrative's atmosphere and character depth. The nar- rator's role is crucial in engaging and interpreting the text, with audiobooks facilitating new literary forms like "Audio First" literature. The analysis reveals that audiobooks cater to modern consumption patterns, offering flexibility and accessibility, thus integrating literature consumption into daily life. This trend is particularly evident among younger generations, who seamlessly incorporate audiobooks into their routines. However, challenges arise due to the lack of visual support and fixed narrative progres- sion, which can hinder some listeners from following complex plots and character develop- ments, especially when multitasking. This highlights the importance of well-crafted and thoughtful narration to maintain listener engagement and interest. In conclusion, the findings indicate that audiobooks are a potent medium with the potential to transform our understanding and use of literature. They call for broader recognition of the unique qualities of the audiobook format in literary and academic circles and invite a reevalu- ation of what it means to 'read' in the 21st century. Audiobooks represent not only a new way to experience literature but also an opportunity to explore new narrative techniques and del- ve into literature's many facets in a manner congruent with contemporary lifestyles.
