Abstract
This thesis investigates why Denmark’s Social Democrats shifted their position on refugees and immigration ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election. It traces the party’s approach from 1994 to 2019, examining the legislation it supported in government and opposed in opposition, and how a tougher line on immigration was paired with a more left‑leaning economic platform. The study relies on secondary sources (academic literature, journal articles, official party materials, Statistics Denmark, UNHCR, and Danish government websites) and employs Harmel and Janda’s Integrated Theory of Party Goals and Party Change. Based on this framework, four analytical models are outlined, and two—core voter defection and prior electoral defeat—are applied to explore likely drivers of policy change in a mainstream party. The aim is to clarify the strategic considerations that can lead a centre‑left party to adopt a more restrictive immigration stance to maximize votes and attain office. Findings are not presented in this excerpt.
