Abstract
This thesis investigates why people migrate, with a particular focus on Syrian migration toward the European Union. It treats migration as a multifaceted phenomenon shaped by sociopolitical, economic, demographic, environmental, and network factors, and poses the core question: why do people migrate, and what motivated or compelled Syrians to move to the EU? The study organizes determinants at macro, meso, and micro levels, drawing on neoclassical economics, general systems approaches, network theory, cumulative causation, and push-pull perspectives, and it approaches migration as a sociopolitical crisis. Methodologically, it combines theory-driven analysis with a case study of Syrian routes to Europe, assessed through push-pull dynamics and social system effects and supported by descriptive statistics from UN, IOM, and EU sources cited in the text. The planned analysis examines how security, rights, opportunity structures, and accessibility interact with social capital and existing networks to shape destinations and pathways.
