This thesis explores where economics and culture intersect by analyzing China’s growing economic engagement in Indonesia and the potential implications for Indonesian culture and society. Against the backdrop of great-power rivalry and Indonesia’s rising strategic profile, it asks whether rapid Chinese investment risks creating asymmetric dependence, renewing mistrust and anti-Chinese sentiment, or whether international and regional institutions can mitigate tensions. The study adopts a qualitative, theory-led case approach that combines historical and cultural perspectives with neoliberalism, realism, and asymmetrical interdependence, and surveys existing scholarship and public sources (including examples of investments in energy, mining, infrastructure, e‑commerce, and tourism).
