Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine which factors influence social workers’ practice in their work with children experiencing school refusal. The study is based on the following research question: Which factors are of significance for the practice of social workers in relation to their work with children suffering from school refusal? To answer this question, the study focuses on three interrelated analytical dimensions: the social workers' understanding of school refusal, the social workers personal and professional competencies, and lastly, the structural terms surrounding the practice. These three dimensions form an analytical foundation, where the structural terms define the working conditions, the understanding of school refusal shapes the perspective on the problem and the competencies determine how the social workers act in practice with cases regarding school refusal. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach and designed as a qualitative interview form. The data consists of semistructured interviews with social workers who have experience with children suffering from school refusal. An abductive approach is used as the analysis is grounded in both empirical material and relevant theories.
