Abstract

Social network services (SNS) have become popular in Denmark, and many people use multiple platforms. This study investigates what motivates Danish SNS users to share or not share information on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, and how they think about privacy when doing so. We consider both social privacy (what friends and followers can see) and institutional privacy (how platforms and organizations handle data). We conducted a survey and recruited participants from it for focus groups and interviews. Together, these methods provided data for interpretation. The results show that the main motivation to disclose or withhold information is the desire to create, control, and maintain an online image.
