Abstract
This qualitative study investigates factors that individuals who have experienced burnout consider crucial for their recovery, as well as their perceptions of the help received from the Norwegian healthcare system. Utilizing semi-structured inter-views and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)., the experiences of two participants, Ida and Fie, were explored. In addition, a healthcare professional with a specialization in burnout was interviewed to lend additional perspectives to the study. Both participants emphasized their struggles with a “pull yourself together” mental-ity, as well as the importance of creating a space for rest, for example in the form of sick leave, increased support from family, and reduced responsibility for childcare in the home. This space for rest was essential for both, enabling them to address maladaptive patterns. In addition, medical assistance in the form of medication was important to the recovery of one participant. While both struggled to seek help, the participants both emphasized how tuning into their physical and psychological needs and boundaries was crucial to their recovery, as well as the necessity of deep self reflection, self care, engagement with their emotions and their intrinsic motivation to identify underlying causes and patterns for their burnout. Additionally, significant changes in the participants’ work environments were nec-essary to their recovery, as several underlying causes were related to their working conditions. Both participants experienced inadequate guidance from healthcare pro-fessionals regarding their sick leave. Both participants expressed a desire for more emphasis on emotional awareness and behavioral patterns, rather than a sole focus on medicating symptoms.
