What affects green consumption in Slovakia?

Abstract

This thesis examines what affects green consumption in Slovakia by analyzing how demographics, attitudes, knowledge, and internal/external moderators relate to three behaviors: purchasing, using, and recycling. Building on prior research, it treats green consumer behavior as three distinct aspects rather than a single category. Data were collected through a Google Forms questionnaire and supplemented by several semi-structured interviews; survey responses were analyzed using correlations and stepwise multiple regression. Findings indicate that psychographic variables (knowledge, attitudes, internal and external moderators) are stronger predictors of green behavior than demographic factors (age, gender, education, occupation, income). Purchasing behavior is most influenced by recycling behavior, followed by external moderators, knowledge, and age; using behavior is predicted by recycling behavior and external moderators; recycling behavior is affected by purchasing and using behaviors. The study underscores practical implications for Slovak policymakers, NGOs, and marketers, while noting limitations related to time, resources, and the convenience sample, which constrain generalizability. Replication with a larger random sample is recommended for more precise guidance.
