Abstract

This thesis explores how virtual environments (VR) can support both the design and delivery of interactive lighting installations, using Brighter Brunnshög in Lund as a case study. It addresses the extent to which digital prototyping and visual immersion can create spatial awareness without physical presence and thereby streamline the lighting design process. The work builds on a design process model (Hansen et al.) and combines a literature review of mixed reality systems with a practice-led workflow that integrates real-time game engines, room-scale VR, and in-VR prototyping. The project includes site analysis and field research, iterative design and testing of materials, luminaires and interactions, creation of a virtual landscape and landmarks, and a plan for evaluating the experience. The thesis contributes a methodology for integrating VR into lighting design and culminates in a virtual installation that employs VR during development as well as in the final experience. Final evaluation and results are presented in later chapters.

Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan virtuelle miljøer (VR) kan understøtte både design og afvikling af interaktive lysinstallationer, med Brighter Brunnshög i Lund som casestudie. Udgangspunktet er spørgsmålet om, i hvilket omfang digital prototyping og visuel immersion kan skabe rumlig forståelse uden fysisk tilstedeværelse og derved gøre lysdesignprocessen mere smidig. Arbejdet bygger på en designprocesmodel (Hansen m.fl.) og kombinerer en litteraturgennemgang af mixed reality-systemer med en praksisbaseret arbejdsgang, der integrerer realtids-spilmotorer, rumskala-VR og prototyping i VR. Projektet omfatter analyse og feltundersøgelse af området, iterativt design og test af materialer, armaturer og interaktioner, opbygning af et virtuelt landskab og vartegn samt plan for evaluering af oplevelsen. Specialet bidrager med en metode til at integrere VR i lysdesign og munder ud i en virtuel installation, der bruger VR både under udvikling og ved selve oplevelsen.
