Abstract
This thesis examines how Viktor Orbán’s hybrid regime in Hungary interacts with the populist themes in his speeches, and how this combination helped deliver another two‑thirds victory in the 2022 parliamentary elections. It traces the rise of populism within Fidesz, identifies hybrid features of the Hungarian political system (a mix of democratic institutions and more authoritarian practices), and maps the populist elements of Orbán’s rhetoric. Methodologically, it is a deductive, qualitative case study that uses Critical Discourse Analysis to study language in its social context and systematic coding of speeches. The coding also produced simple counts of how often specific populist patterns appeared. Theoretically, the thesis draws on hybrid regime and populism theories: first the emergence of populism in Fidesz, then an interpretation of the political system as a hybrid regime, and finally the application of populism theory to understand Orbán’s rhetorical argumentation. The findings show that Orbán’s speeches fostered a broad belief that his party and the existing hybrid regime were the only path to a secure and prosperous Hungary.
