Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic led to repeated lockdowns and a rapid shift to video consultations in psychiatric outpatient care. This thesis examines how clinicians in the North Denmark Region experienced and used video consultations, and how the transition affected their work during the lockdowns. Using a techno-anthropological approach, the study is based on five qualitative interviews with psychologists and psychiatrists, complemented by a literature search, and analyzes themes such as evaluation, organizational conditions, relationships, and nonverbal communication. The findings indicate that video consultations are useful for certain types of encounters and worked as a practical solution during lockdowns, but in their current form they cannot replace in-person therapy for patients who need it. The study offers insights into the conditions, potential, and limitations of video consultations in psychiatry and underscores the need for context-sensitive use.
