Abstract
This thesis brings together two articles from a long master’s project in Structural and Civil Engineering. The first article, 'Laboratory Setup for Vertically Loaded Suction Caisson Foundation in Sand and validation of Responses,' presents a laboratory test rig and procedures at Aalborg University to study a suction caisson foundation in sand under vertical (axial) loading and to validate the measured responses. A suction caisson is a hollow cylindrical foundation anchored in sand by creating suction. The article also applies methods based on cone penetration test (CPT) data and so‑called beta methods to estimate soil resistance; the key parameters in these methods are analyzed and fitted (calibrated). The second article, 'Present Knowledge about Laboratory Testing of Axial Loading on Suction Caissons,' is a state‑of‑the‑art review that summarizes published research on laboratory tests of axial loading on suction caissons.
